Fly tying Classes

Tying your own flies is an enjoyable, fruitful pursuit that will help you to become a better fly fisher, and will increase your pleasure in the sport.  Flycasters  offers many opportunities to learn to tie or to improve your skills. Tying flies knows no season or time of day.  It will introduce you to the biology of much of the aquatic and terrestrial life that is hidden from most people.  It will improve your vocabulary and your manual dexterity.

Flycasters hold a series of three formal fly tying courses each year. Occasionally the Club offers seminars on tackle and flies needed for upcoming Club Fishouts.

Fly Tying Classes

Beginning Fly Tying Class

FLY TYING

6 SESSIONS

The six week class traditionally starts around the first of the year (see club calendar for dates). It consists of orientation, basic information, information on hooks, how to choose the right hook for a pattern, materials used for tying, preservation of tying materials, references, etc.

Prior to the first class students need to have purchased one bobbin holder, one spool of 6/0 black thread and one spool of 3/0 black thread. At the first class we will discuss the essential, and some of the desirable, tools; vises, lamps, bobbin holders, scissors, et al, and give some suggestions on purchasing these items. This will be followed by an examination of the tools that the students already possess. The two essential fly tying knots will be demonstrated and practiced. The step-by-step illustrated tying instructions for the two flies to be tied at the following week's class will be handed out to allow for advanced study of the patterns.

At each of the subsequent five classes two flies will be demonstrated and then tied by the students. In addition to the Chief Instructor and any Demonstration Tier, several experienced Club tiers will be available during each class to assist the students. During each weekly class one fly is tied by the students with the assistance of the instructors, with the expectation that three additional flies, of the same patterns, will be tied by the student at home during the week. These flies are then brought back to the next class to be critiqued.
