Much of the interest and fun in belonging to Flycasters is learning about fly fishing from the many seminars which are organized, managed and conducted by volunteer members. Some seminars and classes focus on varying skill levels (beginning, intermediate and advanced) allowing an angler to progress and achieve a high level of expertise

A great way to fish still waters is from a “personal water craft”.  Better know as a float tubes or pontoon boats these devices allow a fly fisherperson to move around in still water to reach positions that a wading or bank fisherperson cannot reach.  And, they give you the finite control that is sometimes lacking when fishing from a boat.

We have scheduled this seminar before the June Fishout to Rooster Comb Ranch and the July Fishout at Manzanita Lake to allow new float tubers an opportunity to get in on these great fishouts.  So, on Saturday, May 11th, we will hold a seminar on “Float Tubes” that will cover their different types, the related equipment, basic operation, how to fish from a tube or pontoon and, most importantly, safety related to tubes and wading.  You will be able to see and discuss the various types as well as try out some tubes.  We will cover what you need to fish from a tube and see some other member’s setups.  Also, a short presentation on water safety will be included.  We will hold this seminar beginning at 9am at the boat ramp at Stevens Creek Reservoir

Learn what to look for in a floatation device that fits your style and cost before you buy.  You do not need bring your own if you have one.

There is no  fee for this seminar, but handout materials will be provided.

Sign up at May meeting, or by contacting Wade Goertz, Seminars Chairperson.

Flycasters is once again offering a series of fly tying classes beginning February 20.

Bill Zuravleff and Bill Mahan are the new co-chairs for Flycasters Fly Tying Classes as our club says THANK YOU to Victor Inouye for many years of dedication and patient instruction.  Bill Nelson will be supplying instructions and materials handed down from his dad, Dick Nelson, one of the true legends of fly tying.

The first class will be an overview of tying - focusing on the tools and materials used in tying flies.  It is also a great time to ask questions. The date February 20th was chosen to give new tiers the chance to make a list of everything they will need to take the classes and then find some bargains at the Fly Fishing Show in Pleasanton which begins of February 22.

Over the subsequent 5 sessions each student will be given instruction and material to tie 2 flies each night.  And enough material to complete several more of each pattern at home in between classes.  At the end of the Beginning Fly Tying Classes each student will have the knowledge and experience to tie 10 flies and the ability to learn how to tie dozens more.

The Beginning Fly Tying Classes will run for 6 consecutive Wednesdays - Feb 20 and 27 -March 6-20-27 and the last class will be on April 3rd.  Classes will be held at the Conference Room M250 at the Winchester Plaza, 1101 S. Winchester Blvd., San Jose.  Each class will begin at 7:00pm

Cost for the entire group of classes is $35 for members of Flycasters.  Class size is limited so sign up early - contact Bill Zuravleff at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

You can pay at the February 13th  Flycasters meeting - make checks out to Flycasters Inc. -  Payment is needed to ensure enrollment.

The classes are designed for those who have never tied a fly before and yet are equally valuable to veteran tiers as well.  The classes are fun and very collaborative.  There are always plenty of instructors to help give each member some individual attention.
