Programs Info

A former chemistry teacher, chemical engineer, inventor and manufacturing company owner for 20+ years, Kent moved to Mammoth in 1992 so he could ski full time and didn’t have a clue what he was going to do to kill time in the summers. He walked into the Trout Fly the first summer to see what this fly fishing 'thing' was all about and the rest is history. By the end of that summer he was fishing 5-6 days a week and hasn’t let up since.

kent

After buying the Trout Fly and then the Troutfitter he kidded that he didn’t tie flies or guide because it cut into his fishing time. We’ll, he gave in on both fronts and now guides and ties, both, but restricts his activities to Crowley Lake and his custom "Optimidge" chironimid patterns to use on the lake. “I like to fish streams too, but let’s face it, the odds of catching a big fish on any given day is best on Crowley and that’s what does it for me. It’s a different puzzle figuring out how to find and fool the monsters every day. I love solving the puzzle and sticking the big ones!"

In his guiding Kent likes to concentrate on the teaching aspect. “The biggest reward for me is to see kids get turned on to fly fishing and to have clients come back and tell me that the things I have taught them have made a major differenece in their ability to catch fish on their own."

John R. Ganter

John has been fly fishing for over 40 years and fly tying almost as long. He has had over 50 articles published in fly fishing magazines. He does demonstration fly tying at various venues including the FFF national conclaves and The Fly Fishing Show. He teaches fly tying and does club presentations when he is not fishing. He has guided and managed a fishing lodge. He has produced and sells CD's and DVD's that teach tiers to tie many of his fly patterns.  John lives in Redding with his dog Riley. He is a long time member of Shasta Trinity Fly Fishers.

He has been presenting his "Bugology 101" program to fly clubs for a few years. He is not a professional  entomologist, and presents all of his programs as an angler and for anglers. Bugology 101 teaches the angler to recognize and identify the major aquatic insects (without getting into Latin names and unnecessary minutiae) in both their adult and nymphal stages. The program than looks at flies that imitate the insects. This program is designed to help you catch more fish.

Matt Zawacki - Fishabout - Flyfishing Loreto Mexico
Matt_Zawacki
Matt joined Flycasters in the early 2000's and quickly became active in the club starting with chairing the "Evening Rise" (a monthly fly tying / social get together in the club room) and was eventually voted in as club president for 2008. Like many flyfisherman Matt had (and still has) a fondness for fly fishing for trout in both streams and rivers and on still water and took advantage of the clubs casting lessons to become a better trout flyfisherman. Along the way, again like many club members, Matt attended many club seminars and fishouts to learn how to fly fish for surf perch, striped bass and more. After seeing trip pictures and hearing tales from other club members about fly fishing at Loreto Mexico, in 2006 Matt and Jim Knecht went to Loreto for 3 days to check it out. Matt fell in love with fly fishing in the Sea of Cortez and has been back every summer since. In 2007 Matt began fly fishing at Loreto as a client with Fishabout International and in early 2010 Fishabout trip host Atwin King decided to retire after 23 years of hosting Loreto trips and Matt was selected by Atwin and Fishabout to become the new Loreto trip host starting in July 2011. The rest is (future) history!
